happy halloween! if you worked with me you would have gotten one of these sweet ghosts. i guess the next best thing to eating one of these delicious merengue treats is looking at them. aren't they the cutest and spookiest things you've ever seen?

even lou has gotten in the spirit. although it seems as though she isn't very happy with me, either for not letting her eat a ghost or for making her wear a homemade pumpkin tag. i did not dress up today. but i am thinking ahead and for next year i might go in this direction:

i heart....living with music

one of my favorite things to read is a weekly column called living with music...it's part of the new york times book blog "paper cuts" and is a playlist written by a different author/literary personality each week.

i particularly enjoyed this week's post by author joshua ferris. he effortlessly describes the undefinable relationships we've all no doubt experienced with our favorite songs. some of my favorite quotes:

"I have the memory of the day when I was in love with the song and the memory is why I listen to it now."
(about a one time favorite song that has been on repeat and overplayed to the point that you can't stand to hear it any longer)

"so good a song, it is dangerous to share with friends."
(about a good friend not agreeing with what you believe to be a truly amazing song...you are so appalled you are forced to question your friend's taste and depth of character)

"and for that brief spell before the world took over, I was alone with a song that moved me unlike any before it."
(on the song that was once a secret underground treasure but became so popular and commercial it is uncool to admit you ever even liked it in the first place)

summer is winding down and fall is upon us. the light is changing, the air is cooling down and autumn shEW!z are surfacing (see the crugg below and the tweed shrimp and biscuit bootie above). with the change of season i am happy to bring you a few more words to add to your "bad fashion" vernacular. when fashiON becomes fashiOFF:

blOUCH!= an unattractive blouse or shirt (can also be called a "S"top!)
gOW!n= an ugly dress or smock, the tEW!nic falls in this category
trOW!ser= a pair of bad pants
ponchOHNO!= a stressful poncho (tom came up with this one)
NO!verall= inspired by the ponchOHNO! and basically speaks for itself
skHURT= a painful skirt (can also be applied for the tops classification in the form of a sHURT but we like bLOUCH! better)
clUGH!tch*= an unsightly purse....(can also be called a handBAD depending on its size/function)

*when pronounced outloud this is not to be confused with the CL-heughhh!-tch which is a favorable way of calling out a tough and sexy clutch...i.e. one coodz might carry. next time you speak with tom have him provide you with an example, he's good

in doing some research i came across a few choice examples of the rare hybrid of the above offences:

an embellished trOW!ser+handBAD (my friend autumn likes to call this the "vagina purse")
and in some cases it is also referred to as a "denim bootie bag"....
if i didn't know better i would have pictured a jeanpurse in the form of a small boot which i could not find an example of, but i did come across this gem:
shEW! + clUGH!tch (i can't tell if it is a pump or a bootie but in any case it's so gloriously awful!):

it's a well known fact that i enjoy taking pictures of walls. (particulary in public restrooms). so you can imagine my joy upon discovering this. but nomatter what CFR is and will always be my favorite.

i was pretty excited the other day while i was at the beach and saw about 20 dolphins frollicking in the surf...but imagine the excitement of these dutch kids when this life size lego man washed up on their beach...wtf?

i heart....the cinema

in general, i don't watch cartoons. so needless to say i haven't really spent much time with "aqua teen hunger force". but after coming across this hilarious trailer i am declaring myself an instant fan.

i heart....cruising successfully

so i spent my sunday at sea sailing on a boat that goes by the name of "sugar magnolia". it was a nice follow-up to saturday, which was spent with my dear friend mr. abbey by the pool eating taffy cookies (the ultimate summer cookie in my opinion). the sun went down and we were cold so we bundled up in cashmere cardigans and went to see parker posey's new movie "broken english" (i'd go see it if i were you).

other recent activities include an outing to cinespia for a picnic and a screening of roman holiday...where tom met johnny ramone and tried to feed the ducks. (if you can't read his shirt it says "eat to live, not live to eat". if you have to ask him what that means, you are an idiot. if you are the guy next to us who managed to plow through a bag of pirate's booty while sleeping through the movie, your shirt should read, "eat to sleep, not sleep to eat")

there have also been a few trips to sf where lou and i visited our pal stanley and did some sightseeing at the palace of fine arts...and she fought with the ducks...
oh yeah, and i made a really refreshing salad one day. if it's hot where you are and you want a delicious salad you should try this one...jicama, grapefruit, avocado and pumpkin seeds. so yummy! (check out my new (but very old) hand painted japanese dish set!)
summer is here and i'm lovin every minute of it...hope you are too.

why? cause it makes me happy and it speaks to me...it says "old fashioned". that's why i recently had my fingers and toes painted in this color. hmmm, come to think of it, that might look especially good while holding a an actual "old fashioned" in honor of national cocktail month...

after wrapping up a proper cinco de mayo weekend, i came across this: the museum of the american cocktail has declared may 13th world cocktail day. according to the website, this year's celebration will take place the weeks surrounding May 13th (not just the day of). that means we should be celebrating this week and next week and probably the following week to really show our appreciation for the rich history of the cocktail. cheers!

as many of you know, leslie feist is one of my very favorite musicians. her new album the reminder is out today and i suggest you go get it. and by "go get it" i mean do it the old fashioned way and go to your local record shop and buy it. cause what makes this album extra special (besides a batch of beautiful songs) is that my good pal simone designed the album art and it turned out stunning! and if you missed it i posted a video for "1234" a while back so check it out. i promise it will make you smile.

speaking of reminders, i am in desparate need of some new sunglasses and couldn't help but notice the recent comeback of the ray ban. while contemplating whether or not i want to get a new pair i was reminded of this photo from 1986:
guess who's rocking the white wayfarers? yes, that would be me, the only kid in tennis camp who had to wear sunglasses. now if i could only find the picture of my 3 year old self with the rollers in my hair and my yellow "joe cool" snoopy tee...

one of my favorite movies from last year was "me and you and everyone we know" (which also has a beautiful soundtrack). miranda july is the very funny woman who wrote and starred in it. her latest project is a book called "nobody belongs here more than you" and i can't wait to read it. we are all in for a treat if the book is as cute and funny as this website for it..
